In a significant reaffirmation of its foreign policy, Bangladesh has reintroduced the phrase “valid for all countries except Israel” on its passports, three years after removing it without prior notice. Large rallies have been held across Bangladesh, including the recent “March for Gaza” in Dhaka, where tens of thousands of citizens called on the government to strengthen its solidarity with Palestine. For decades, Bangladesh’s passports included the “except Israel” clause, reflecting the country’s refusal to recognize Israel diplomatically.
However, in 2021, the government removed this phrase while enforcing a travel ban, claiming the adjustment was necessary to align with global standards. Many Bangladeshis viewed this change as a compromise of principle.
Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the official reinstatement of the phrase in newly printed passports. This decision received overwhelming support from religious groups, civil society, and the general public, who had been vocal about desiring this change. By reinstating the “not valid for Israel” message, Bangladesh joins Pakistan in making a symbolic yet powerful diplomatic statement.
