What started as a journey for survival turned into a story of success few could have predicted. Abdul Kabeer Shah left Karachi at 21 with little more than hope and determination. Like many Pakistani workers in Saudi Arabia, he started in the shadows—doing odd jobs as an assistant for electricians and plumbers across Riyadh and Jeddah.
But in 2004, things took a flavorful turn. Shah joined a fast-food chain and discovered his knack for cooking—particularly burgers and shawarmas. One of his regular customers, Saudi national Dr. Abdullah Albalawi, was so impressed with his skills that he offered to partner with Shah. With Albalawi providing the capital and Shah bringing in the culinary hustle, Alta’am was born.
Fast forward to today, and Alta’am boasts eight branches in Jeddah, serving mouth-watering dishes with a signature twist—Asian spices that make their food stand out. What began as survival is now a thriving business employing over a hundred workers.
Shah, once crammed in a shared labor camp, now lives in a luxury apartment in Jeddah and owns a palatial home in Islamabad. He travels between the two, still grounded but proud. His message to fellow Pakistanis?
“Saudi Arabia is a land of opportunity—but do it right, stay legal, and build with purpose.”
From laborer to entrepreneur, Shah’s journey is proof: it’s not where you start, but how hungry you stay.
