Chinese marketplace DHgate becomes a top US app

As the U.S.-China trade war heats up, a surprising player has emerged on American smartphones: DHgate, a Chinese online marketplace, is now one of the most downloaded apps in the U.S. In a matter of days, the app jumped from 352nd to 3rd in the U.S. iPhone App Store rankings, driven largely by viral attention on platforms like TikTok.

The sudden rise comes amid growing trade tensions between Washington and Beijing. With tariffs intensifying—some reaching over 100% on key goods—consumers in the U.S. are turning to affordable alternatives. DHgate, known for offering budget versions of branded goods, is resonating with American shoppers feeling the pinch of inflation and rising retail prices.

On April 13 alone, the app saw over 117,000 iOS downloads, with more than half coming from the U.S. This surge reflects a growing appetite for low-cost imports, even as U.S. policymakers push for reduced reliance on Chinese goods. Ironically, while trade barriers are intended to limit Chinese influence, apps like DHgate are proving how quickly digital platforms can outpace policy.

The popularity of DHgate also underscores the complex nature of global commerce. Despite political rhetoric, the demand for inexpensive goods continues to link consumers in the U.S. to suppliers in China. Whether this growth is sustainable amid regulatory scrutiny remains to be seen, but for now, DHgate has carved out a powerful niche in the American e-commerce landscape.
